    • No academic program or training seminar can prepare you for the wide ranging challenges of IT management. The key to becoming an outstanding IT Manager has always been finding a mentor who has mastered the business, technical and leadership skills you need to develop.

Every executive who takes on additional responsibilities should be mentored.

In addition to the 360° profile and group coaching, students in this program engage in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a local IT executive, typically a CIO, with whom they meet monthly to discuss their leadership objectives and related course work. Students have an opportunity to go beyond the requirements of the program and build deep, lasting relationships with their mentors.

The failure rate for newly appointed leaders is alarmingly high. According to a Harvard Business Review study, two out of every five new executives fail in the first 18 months. Some of the reasons for this include inability to handle internal politics; uncertainty about company expectations, and failure to build appropriate networks.

Our CIO mentors have mastered the business, technical, and leadership skills necessary to be an outstanding IT Leader. They have agreed to share their time and experiences with our students to help them master these skills as well.

Jack Welch said, "Being a leader changes everything."

With the unique combination of coursework, guest lectures, networking, coaching, and mentoring included in VCU's Executive MS -- IS program, you can be the IT Leader of the Future!
