Kelsey Kellam ’07
Hometown: Hampton, VA
Major: Business Administration
Why she chose VCU
I met someone who had recently graduated, and he turned me on to VCU by telling me it was this great school. He told me Kelsey you have to go to VCU. You’re going to love it. It’s perfect for you. It’s unique. It’s just a wonderful experience.
I started to look at all the different things that VCU had to offer me, being a business student. It’s in the heart of Richmond. There’s so much opportunity here, and then I kept hearing about how many of the professors were coming straight from their jobs during the day to teach at night, and they could offer you so much experience. That really turned me on to the school.
Choosing a major
I think you have to choose your own path. But definitely if you’re interested in business, business administration gives you a very broad overview, and it also allows you to get in depth with different types of businesses, so you have more of an opportunity and more of a range versus just a single concentration. However if you do pick a single concentration, I do think it’s good to go in and get the expertise and specialize in something. Business administration lets me have the opportunity to pick and choose and be creative and do a bunch of different things. I like to have options.
Life outside of class
I’m more of a homebody. I like to hang out and do my own thing, but school spirit and going to the activities that the school holds is a lot of fun. It’s just that everybody has so much pride, and we like to have fun. There’s such a diverse group of people that instead of just learning inside the classroom, you get to learn a lot outside from your peers. I’ve grown a lot just from interacting with the people that we have because they bring so many different outlooks to the table.
How she got started in her career
I have to give credit to Darlene Ward from our career center. She helped me vastly. I really hadn’t planned on getting into the government, and then she had this great opportunity came up, and of course Darlene is a very enthusiastic woman, and she said It’s perfect for you! It’s perfect for you! You have to do it. The job was perfect for me because it has a lot to do with the quality management stuff and the process management that I was interested in from the classes that I took here.
Advice for new freshmen
How to succeed? Well, it’s actually very funny. I recruited my little sister. She just started. And I told her, be smart. Everybody’s going to come to college and have fun and get a taste of freedom and being away from their parents, but you have the opportunity to shape where you’re going. And your choices are going to shape your future. So be smart, have fun, apply yourself and really take the time to hear what your professors are saying because they’re not just saying it just because they have to. These people have a passion for what they’re doing. Otherwise, I mean, why would you be here teaching a bunch of cranky teenagers at eight a.m. in the morning? So just really focus.
